Summer bat patrols restart

Thursday, July 02, 2009, 15:56

This week sees the return of the popular Summer Bat Patrols at Cheddar Caves and Gorge, now in their third season.

Starting this week, each Monday evening Cheddar Caves' conservation officer Jon Hill will give a talk about the gorge's population of rare bats, then lead a one-and-a-half hour patrol, using ultra-sonic detectors to track the bats as they emerge from the caves to feed on moths and insects.

Those attending quickly learn how to use the detectors to identify different species of bats, and some impressive sightings have been made during the past two summers.

Bat Patrol tickets are £10 per person, including free parking. Refreshments are available.

Each talk starts at a different time, depending on sunset, and places are limited, so ring 01934 742343 to reserve a spot.
