WE'VE all experienced stress at some point in our lives and more than 400,000 people in the UK admit to experiencing work-related stress. Some levels of stress can be helpful, giving us that little push to get things done. However, prolonged periods of stress can increase the risk of developing heart disease. National Stress Awareness Day, on 4th November, is all about being positive and is the perfect time to start keeping your stress in check.

• in a stressful situation, use positive brainpower to transport you to a happy place - picture yourself on a tranquil beach or think back to your happiest memory

• don't underestimate your own power; self belief is empowering, so take control of your life rather than letting others control it for you

• don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today; things like Christmas shopping are better done in advance, that way you'll beat the stress of long queues

• getting together with family and friends is a great way to take your mind off things. Having a catch up meal or taking advantage of the seasonal ice rinks is sure to put a smile on your face.

• plan some 'me' time to relax, exercise or even read a few chapters of a good book. Fit in some well-deserved pampering to take the edge off that troublesome stress.

Stress can lead to unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking, drinking too much alcohol and eating an unhealthy diet, all of which can lead to heart disease. So take on life with a positive attitude, say goodbye to stress and keep your heart happy and healthy.
