While some villages are unfortunately seeing empty shops in their high streets, one is continuing to thrive.

Two estate agents have opened this week in Winscombe, with an investment firm opening its doors during the past two months.

In the past year a jewellers and hardware store came to Winscombe, and a ladies' fashion salon and shoe shop changed hands.

Councillor Chris Sampson, vice-chairman of Winscombe and Sandford Parish Council, said: "We are delighted that Winscombe continues to survive in these difficult financial times.

"All I would says to the residents of Winscombe is use it or lose it."

The village boasts three banks, two butchers, a bakery, a ladies and gents hairdressing salon and a cottage tea room.

And that's not counting a fish and chip shop which caters for those intolerant to gluten, a Chinese and Indian take away and kebab outlet and pub.
