US visitors gather where punk meets Appalachia
The authentic flavour of an Appalachian Mountain hoe-down comes to Totnes this month with the arrival of The Black Twig Pickers from the United States. It's quite a coup to find this outfit performing in the Westcountry and that's down to an invitation from Rupert Morrison at the town's Drift Records shop who loves their fresh take on this age-old style.
Over the course of eight full-length records, including collaborative releases with Jack Rose and Charlie Parr, a split LP with Glenn Jones, and numerous EPs and singles, the group have established themselves as a collection of dedicated practitioners of old-time music, re-cast and shaped by their appreciation of modern improvisation, drone, and punk.
They feature Mike Gangloff on fiddle, banjo, jaw-harp and vocals; Nathan Bowles on banjo, percussion and vocals; Isak Howell on guitar, mouth-harp and vocals; and Sally Anne Morgan on fiddle, flat-foot dancing, square dance calling, and vocals.
While not at odds with the experimental scene that has fostered them or the old time circles they travel in, The Black Twig Pickers thrive in the inbetween-ness of those two worlds.

Duo combine folk sounds from both sides of Atlantic
Seasoned British acoustic guitarist Kevin Dempsey and young Cincinnati folk fiddler Rosie Carson have teamed up for a UK tour that swings by Grampound Community Hall in Cornwall tomorrow. The pair have already released two collaborative albums. Kevin has been on the acoustic music scene since the late 1970s, playing with artists like Dave Swarbrick, Martin Carthy and Whippersnapper. He's also played soul with Percy Sledge and Motown with The Marvelettes. Together he and Rosie combine traditional folk from both sides of the Atlantic. For tickets visit carntocove.co.uk.
