On-the-spot fines are a good idea
I AGREE completely with the letter- writer who suggests we should introduce tougher, on the spot fines against cyclists who endanger or harass others.
If some cycling campaigners clamour for "Dutch-style" cycleways, they should also accept Dutch-style discipline and rules. £50 fines are needed (as they have in Holland) against people who ignore the Highway Code, cycle far too fast where there are also pedestrians, ride at night with no lights, and generally show no regard for others.
Decent, law-abiding cyclists will have nothing to fear from such fines, as they will only affect the yobbish minority.
Undercover officers would soon send out the message that Bristol expects people to show common sense and follow the rules, for the good of all. Such officers can also issue on the spot fines to motorists too.
