Bristol Harlequins 1st XV 25 Midsomer Norton 1st XV 24

Following victory against Old Sulians in the Somerset Vase, Norton were edged out by table-toppers Bristol Harlequins in the Somerset Premier.

Norton struggled to gain possession in the opening 10 minutes but a well-placed kick sent them upfield and Gareth Williams scored following a scrum. Ben Moon converted.

Quins pulled three points back but Norton had two claims for a try turned down before Moon sniped around the corner of a ruck for the second try, adding the conversion himself.

Martin Blackmore set up Tom Lovell for Norton's third try of the game and they went in at half-time 19-3 ahead.

However, a try and a penalty saw the hosts reduce the deficit, before Williams crossed for what appeared to be the decisive try.

The game was still far from secure and a penalty try put Quins within striking distance, before a disputed injury-time score sealed victory for the hosts.

Norton are next in action at home to Chard on Saturday.

Midsomer Norton 2nd XV 61 Winscombe 2nd XV 9

The seconds returned to top form on Saturday as they comprehensively outplayed their league visitors from Winscombe.

Good work from Pete Hampshire and captain Julian Hawkins set up lock Tom Hillier for the first of his two tries to open the scoring.

This was the spur that the home side needed and they turned the screw. Winscombe were rewarded for their efforts with three penalties but Norton ran in tries at regular intervals.

Hawkins went over in typically robust fashion before Hampshire scorched away for two well-taken touchdowns from distance.

Centre Nick Bolt and winger Tom Marsden scored to make the half-time score 25-9.

Norton completed the rout after the break with tries from Sam Prentice, Hiller, Dave Sawkins, Joe Button, Dave Merrigan and fly-half Ian Tiley.

On Saturday, the seconds travel to Weston Hornets.

Clevedon 3rd XV 30 Midsomer Norton 3rd XV 26

Norton travelled to Clevedon on Saturday and were narrowly beaten.

Injuries to key players Tim Shepard and Matthew Hobbs did not help the team's cause.

Despite an excellent forward effort against a massive Clevedon pack, and a good all-round team performance, they came up just short.

Try-scorers for Norton were Jamie Travers, John Parry, Adam Watts and Sam Hughes.

Midsomer Norton Colts 0 Cleve Colts 60

A number of injuries to key personnel saw the Colts forced to encounter a well-drilled Cleve outfit with only 14 fit players.

Despite the eventual scoreline, the Norton boys battled to the end. Fly-half Sam Hughes typified the home side's determination as he put in a number of excellent hits to keep the visitors out.

Stand-in prop Nathan Prior battled hard all afternoon.
