'The road closures cost me between £3,000 and £5,000' says Cheddar Valley's Pub of the Year
I was surprised to see Betty Chalkley’s letter last week regarding the efficiency etc of the road closure.
As a small local business, cut off entirely from Cheddar for 30 days at my busiest time, the closure cost me between £3,000 and £5,000. Heaven knows how much Budgens and Tesco lost.
The signposting was entirely inadequate as everyone thought the road was closed at weekends as well, when in fact the workers didn’t work any weekend evenings at all.
The closure was extremely badly planned and the whole of Cheddar could have been made accessible within a week if they had surfaced from the bridge to the monument first. Half of the work could have been carried out with single-lane traffic light closures.

I sent a photograph to Highways department of five workers stood on the pavement by Tesco watching one man dig kerbstones in a mini digger, when the whole road was closed off needlessly.
I too would enjoy watching men at work, but don’t appreciate my taxes being spent on men watching work.
Needless to say I didn’t receive a reply from Highways.
