review: Smoke and Mirrors by Karen Bateman, 5/5
SMOKE and Mirrors, in Denmark Street, was established in 2012 and has had a magical first year.
Its existence is credit to director, compere, magician, illusionist, Jack of all trades and master of all Mark Bennett. On entering the venue Mark proved the perfect host, interacting with his guests waiting with huge anticipation for what proved to be a show I'd never seen the likes of before.
After a short and comedic introduction from Mark, putting me at my ease, award-winning magician Richard Newman was invited to the stage. This magician really was top notch, I'm not surprised he is award winning! His likeability and soft manner, coupled with jaw-dropping tricks and illusions, will have me returning again and again. This magical genius even had members of the audience completing tricks for him. The things Richard can do with balloons, eggs and paintballs left me aghast and asking how, why, and what did I just witness?
The second half was more illusion-based and dare I say comedic. If Mark Bennett ever fancies a career change I'm sure the Edinburgh fringe would welcome him with open arms, I was laughing out loud at his wit and quick retorts, bouncing off the crowd and thriving from their obvious glee and amazement.
