Concerned councillors are pressing for people left homeless following the closure of a Clevedon residential home to be re-housed in the local community.

Shaw Healthcare, which owns Cherry Orchard Residential Home in Cherry Avenue, is planning to close the home in November.

The decision came after the company said the home, which was built in the 1960s and currently has 23 residents, was no longer fit for purpose and did not meet the needs of its clients.

It also said more people were opting to stay in their own homes and buy in help, prompting a decline in the number of people using the service. People living at the home are concerned they will now be moved to other residential care centres out of the town – in Weston-super-Mare or Portishead.

Clevedon Town Council has now written to bosses at Shaw Healthcare and to North Somerset Council asking for efforts to be made to rehouse residents at other care homes in the town.

Clevedon councillor David Shopland said: “We want to ensure that those people who have to move out of Cherry Orchard due to its closure can stay in the town and are re-housed locally.

“This home was created for people in the Clevedon and district area and many of the residents are from Clevedon and have their family and support network in the town.”

Cherry Orchard has been run by Shaw Healthcare for the last 12 years.

A spokesman for Shaw Healthcare said: “We will be closing Cherry Orchard care home in Clevedon towards the end of 2012 after nearly 12 years of it being operated by the company. We did explore all options to keep the home open.

“However, the residential care home, built in the 1960s, no longer meets our high standards and due to the constraints on developing the existing building to meet these standards as well as the needs of residents, coupled with a decline in demand for residential care, this has just not been possible.”

The spokesman added that the company were working with employees at Cherry Orchard to relocate them to other homes.
