In his first race of the season, triathlete Tom Derrick, 16, from Blackford, was accompanied by his father Neil Derrick, 54, and school friend Adam Kouidri, 17, in the Exe Valley triathlon.

Tom, racing in his new sponsor's kit, Team Tri UK, came first in the junior age group.

First off was Dad, who completed the 400m swim, 24k bike and 5k run in a creditable one hour and 28 minutes. Adam, in his first triathlon, finished in a good time of 1.18.

Tom set off with the elite swimmers in the last wave, exited the pool up among the leaders and set off for his bike event. The transition was good, but he struggled to fit his feet into the bike shoes as he set off, resulting in some lost valuable time and one lost shoe.

Tom had a great transition on to the run and posted a good run split finishing with an overall time of 1.07.
