Contrast is the name of the game on the modern music stage and you could hardly find two more diverse acts than sweet young British songstress Gabrielle Aplin and German heavy metal guitar king Michael Schenker.

Both these – Gabrielle just emerging and Michael a rock and roll survivor – will be treading the boards in the coming months at the recently refurbished Princess Pavilion by the sea at Falmouth, which once again earned its spurs in 2012 as an excellent mid-size venue.

You might recognise Gabrielle's as the voice behind the excellent hit version of the Frankie Goes To Hollywood cover The Power of Love , which provided the theme for the John Lewis Christmas TV advert.

After developing her craft as writer and performer since the age of 11, Gabrielle signed to Parlophone Records in 2012 and will release her first album in time for her UK tour, which comes to Falmouth on March 27 – a welcome return to Cornwall following her debut on the main stage last summer at the Boardmasters festival at Newquay.

Michael Schenker, who is scheduled to appear on April 16, was last at the same venue in Falmouth in 2008. The former UFO, Scorpions and MSG member – distinguished by his command of his ever-present Gibson Flying V guitar – is reportedly now on his best live form for decades in a show dubbed Temple of Rock, after his most recent album release.

His band boasts ex-Scorpions stars Herman Rarebell and Francis Buchholz on drums and bass, MSG stalwart Wayne Findlay on keyboards and Doogie White (ex-Rainbow) on vocals.

Folk pop with a glam edge joins the mix on April 15 in the form of well-connected rising star King Charles, whose acclaimed debut album LoveBlood hit the Top 40 on release last May. This success, aided by his alliance with Mumford and Sons, an extensive touring schedule and festival slots across the UK and Europe, propelled him from underground hero to daytime radio regular.

A more traditional sound will be aired when classic Irish folk ensemble The Fureys and Davey Arthur play the Pavilion on May 12. After 35 years in the business, they have an impressive back catalogue to plunder including I Will Love You, When You Were Sweet Sixteen, The Green Fields of France and The Old Man.

Other names already booked for the venue in 2013 are master rock and roll country guitar player Albert Lee and his band Hogan's Heroes on May 28. Eighties pop rockers T'Pau – fronted by Carol Decker, owner of one of the biggest female voices of the decade – are celebrating their 25th anniversary with a greatest hits album and their first UK tour as a band since 1991. It comes to Falmouth on June 7.

These season kicks off on January 19 when Canterbury prog rock pioneers Caravan take to the stage with old and new tunes on the menu.
