Once upon a time there were "hedgehog flavoured crisps" which got their maker into trouble for not containing hedgehog. Now a hedgehog has got into trouble for being well and truly contained in a crisp bag.

It took six Good Samaritans to rescue the little creature when it got trapped inside the empty packet in a railed off stairwell outside homes in Weston-super-Mare.

Jamie-Lee Poole and Amanda Debruin spotted the crisp packet among litter and saw the hedgehog peeping out but unable to free itself.

They could not squeeze through the railings to reach it so Jamie–Lee called Prickles Hedgehog Rescue at Cheddar, in Somerset.

Two volunteers arrived and then called the local street warden James Clayton who gave them contact details for Alliance Homes, who immediately sent carpenter John Meare.

He used a grinder to cut through the railings which allowed Jules Bishop founder of Prickles to wriggle behind the bars and rescue the hedgehog.

Ms Bishop, who has a background in childcare and has nursed more than 400 hedgehogs back to health in her tiny back garden sanctuary said that the response was fantastic. The little female hedgehog weighing 280g is recovering at the sanctuary.

Hedgehogs are night-time creatures, so if you see one out in the day there is something wrong.

A prickly customer

Hedgehog-flavoured crisps were invented as a joke in 1981 but the maker was taken to court for false advertising because the crisps were flavoured with pork fat, not hedgehog.

He then interviewed gypsies who ate hedgehogs to discover the true flavour and managed to duplicate it, renaming the crisps "hedgehog flavour" to satisfy all parties.
