Caves' crazy golf offer for voters is bunkered

Plans to offer voters free games of crazy golf in Wookey Hole today appear to have landed in a bunker.

Wookey Hole Caves have been advised that it would not be wise to offer voters free games of crazy golf on local elections polling day.

Caves owner Gerry Cottle wanted to make the offer of a free game on his controversial golf course as he believed it would increase the turnout at the polling booths.

But Mendip District Council told Mr Cottle that the plan could fall foul of rules regulating local elections

A spokesman for Mendip said: "We have advised Wookey Hole Caves that they would not be allowed to carry out any activity which can be seen to be interfering with the duties of anyone wanting to cast a vote on polling day.

"Therefore we have informed the caves that it would be inappropriate for them to publicise or hand out tickets for their golf facility as voters enter the polling station or as they leave, as this could deter some people from voting on June 4 if they are aware that a marketing campaign is under way near the polling station.

"The caves are also aware that their golf facility is currently subject to a retrospective planning application which has yet to be determined."

Daniel Medley, from Wookey Hole Caves, said: "It is a real shame.

"We felt that with MPs apparently grabbing all they can on expenses, it seemed only fair that the public should get something for nothing as well."
