The Bristol Post

AS he left the stage to a standing ovation, Bristol's own Tom Jones must have reflected on a pretty extraordinary personal journey. Five years ago the 26-year-old musician had stood nervously in a deserted school hall in Westbury Park anxiously waiting to see if anybody would respond to his offer to establish a new community choir.

Fast forward to Sunday – and a sell-out audience – which included The Lord Mayor – and Out There Music's 150-strong massed adult and children's choirs and orchestra suggest Tom has struck a remarkable community chord in north Bristol.

Almost every participant had joined Out There Music without an audition – motivated by their simple desire to get involved and rediscover a joy in music.

And this was reflected in a striking selection of songs that spanned Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Coldplay and Mumford & Sons and an orchestral repertoire that took us from Sibelius to Indiana Jones.

Tom marshalled his forces with real relish and energy.

His control of the orchestra was outstanding – and it's clear he has established a keen discipline among the players that makes the very best use of the mixed abilities.
