No mandate for anti-car stance
AFTER Dr Melia's suggestion to close Bristol's centre bridges, I am glad you responded with editorial "Closure of Bridges is recipe for congestion" Bristol Post August 28.
As I said last November, closing off Bristol centre is one possibility but it shouldn't be forced upon us. The mayor George Fegruson has no mandate for his anti-car obsession. Many Bristolians have already said if they'd known what he was going to do, they would certainly not have voted for him. To hide, during his campaign, such sweeping and expensive changes to our city – damaging business and people's pockets and freedom – is, I believe, political deception.
Perhaps the mayor and similarly-minded folk should remember it's not only their city, it's all ours as well. The mayor thinks he is unstoppable but perhaps parliament should create the power of recall – as was talked about for MPs during the expenses scandal. Maybe it's already time for a new mayor who will do what the majority of Bristol people want ?
