All-male awards-winners saved the best 'til last
THERE is a comedy night happening on Friday at the Square in Clifton called What the Frock, the aim of which is to give often overlooked female comedians the chance to perform at an all-woman night of stand-up comedy. Positive discrimination, perhaps. Maybe, even inverted sexism. But the success of What the Frock, founded in Bristol by a former journalist, has since taken it to regular evenings in London.
There are no men on stage at What the Frock, and at the annual NME new band showcase that called into Bristol on Tuesday evening there were no women on stage either. As was the BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist in 2011, this was surely not intentional from the organisers of this annual tour coinciding with the NME Awards.
But it is rather a damning indictment on this once proud music magazine and a tour which in the past has featured the likes of Coldplay bottom of the bill, the position this year taken by Birmingham four-piece Peace.
The packed evening of four bands featured Peace alongside Palma Violets, Miles Kane and Django Django. After Peace's early-Libertines like set came Palma Violets, a London quartet and one of NME's regular "saviours of indie rock". There were a few good moments here, but teetering towards middle of the road.

That's certainly not a criticism to be levelled at Miles Kane, who has now leapt away from the shadow of his mate Alex Turner and is treading the sort of path, now also followed by Jake Bugg, of good old-fashioned rock and roll. But it is Django Django saved the best until last. The Mercury-nominated outfit are the band that many have been waiting for and they don't disappoint with a frenetic set accompanied by a light show which the Northern Ireland outfit don't really need to dazzle this crowd.
