First look at new Tesco supermarket in Glastonbury
The barriers have come down and residents have now been given their first look at the new Tesco supermarket for Glastonbury.
The 25,000 square foot store – smaller than the existing Morrisons supermarket 400 metres away – has been based on the design of their store in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire.

The new Tesco in Glastonbury has almost been completed
Built on the site of the old Avalon Plastics Factory, it features a timber frame, combined heat and power plant, windcatchers on the roof of the store, and energy efficient lighting and equipment to help reduce the store’s carbon footprint by 36 per cent.
Tesco have pledged to stock local products and provide up to 225 jobs.

The recruitment exercise for the new store is now under way.
“The store will offer a wider choice for food shopping in Glastonbury, a modern and spacious shopping environment, a wide range of convenience goods and 227 parking spaces,” said a spokesman for Tesco.
“We will be concentrating on selling food products,” said the spokesman.
“We hope to offer a wide range of convenience foods and a small selection of non-food lines.”
The supermarket has repeatedly tried to assure local residents that they have no plans to close the Tesco in Street.
A previous application for a 40,000 square foot flagship store on the same site caused huge debate in both Street and Glastonbury, with opinion divided between those who felt an additional supermarket in Glastonbury was not necessary, and those who welcomed the employment and “normal shopping experience” that it would bring to Glastonbury.
The company hopes to open the new store in early November.
