First look inside new 24-hour Tesco supermarket in Glastonbury
The doors to Glastonbury’s newest supermarket were unlocked ahead of it’s opening on November 19 to give Central Somerset Gazette readers a look at the new store.
The 25,000 sq ft store on the site of the old Avalon Plastics Factory will feature a timber frame, combined heat and power plant, windcatchers on the roof of the store, energy efficient lighting and will be more than 90 per cent carbon neutral.

It will be open 24 hours a day and has a pharmacy counter which will be open until 11.30pm.
All but two of the 195 vacancies had been filled by the recruitment team in Wells as the Gazette went to press.

Although primarily focussed on food sales, there will be a small section selling household goods and clothing.
“We’re going to be stocking a large amount of organic, whole food and our ‘free from’ range,” said Stewart Collins, who will manage the new store.
“It’s important to us that what we stock will sit well in the area.”
Although plans for the official opening are being kept under wraps, Mr Collins said they hoped that most of their activities would revolve around the customers.
The building process is running just four days behind schedule, and as well as building the store, Tesco also went to work recreating the Mencap Sensory garden next to the store, which had fallen into a state of neglect due to local government cutbacks.
“We just wanted to do something good for the community,” said the store’s deputy manager, SallyLocke.
“We had support from a lot of local businesses like B&Q and Travis Perkins.”
Despite squatters taking over the old Avalon Plastics Factory, site foreman Russell Womersley said there had been no problems on site, and they had no complaints from local residents during the build process.
“We’ve been finishing by 7pm each night,” he said.
“We’re very aware that we’re building next to a hotel – everyone deserves a good night’s sleep.”
The builders working on the site have been staying in hotels and B&Bs throughout Glastonbury, and Tesco say they have made a point of employing local firms for jobs whenever possible.
“I’m really feeling the adrenaline now,” said Mr Collins.
“Every time I come here and see the store closer to being finished, I get a bit more excited about it.
“It’s a beautiful store and I can’t wait to open it’s doors and welcome the people of Street and Glastonbury through them.”
