Top honours for Indian in food scores
A new scale on restaurant and takeaway hygiene has come in and Shahnaz in Cheddar is one of the first to score full marks.
Until now, food premises have been awarded scores in the form of stars.
Now Sedgemoor District Council has adopted the universal zero-to-five mark system from the Food Standards Agency, which is used across the country.
Shahnaz was originally a garage in the 1900s, built by Burnell Brothers.
The garage became a shopping centre and Abdul Hashim opened the Orchid Indian Restaurant in the cafe.
As other businesses relocated, the premises were bought by Hashim who, with his brother Salim as chef, spent four years giving the garage a new lease of life.
The £500,000 conversion into the Shahnaz restaurant brought the building into the 21st century and reopened on Cheddar Festive Night 2006.
