People who own a home that is sitting empty in one corner of the West could be charged 150 per cent council tax, be forced into selling the property or have legal action taken against them to bring it into use. These are among policies being put in place by Mendip District Council in its Empty Homes Strategy. The three-year strategy has been agreed by the Somerset council's cabinet. The latest statistics showed there were 1,441 empty homes in Mendip in 2011.
