A guided trip down Somersetshire Coal Canal memory lane
Guided tours of a gem on the Somersetshire Coal Canal will take place this weekend as part of national Heritage Open Days.
The main line of the vital route needed to overcome a height difference of 138 feet between the Kennet and Avon Canal and Timsbury and Paulton basins and this was achieved with a flight of 22 locks that snaked up the hillside near Combe Hay.

The old locks on the Somersetshire Coal Canal near Combe Hay
The Somersetshire Coal Canal Society is working to preserve the canal that once ran from Dundas to Paulton and Radstock and have cleared the once-overgrown locks at Combe Hay.
Volunteers will be on hand at the flight to talk about the canal and their work from 10am-4pm today and tomorrow. The nearby pumping station is also included.
To avoid congestion visitors should approach from Combe Hay following the road towards Midford.
The Society recently commissioned young artist Amy Morris, of Odd Down, to produce colour-washed photographs to promote the canal. One of her images is reproduced here.

“It did to me as well, so I googled it . . .
"Today we are talking about what is often referred to as the colour wash technique, although it is really more of a compositional style than a technique per se. So what is it?
It is the use of out of focus foreground and background elements to frame or overlay a colour onto the main subject. It can be hit and miss until you develop a bit of a eye for which situations it is likely to work in, when it does work though the results can be quite spectacular."
Still none the wiser, bit above me, looks good though. . .”
