Our government is providing crucial aid
JEREMY Clarke claims that the points I made in my letter about Syria were mistaken.
It is curious that he would see fit to reply to it with a letter full of mistaken assumptions and distorted facts. I do not need a lecture on the history of mistakes in US Foreign Policy. If the US has done evil in the past then helping the people of Syria may help it on the road to redemption.
Mr Clarke speaks of international law and yet ignores the fact that Russia as a permanent UN Security Council member is preventing it being enforced. He praised Russia, which is arming Bashar Al-Assad. International law is only as good as the will of countries to enforce it and interpret it as conceived. Countries manipulated it for their own purpose in 1994, refusing to recognise a genocide where there was clearly one in Rwanda, to excuse them from intervention.
Jeremy asserts that the governments of the US, UK and France are warmongers. If this is the case then why did the executives of those countries not use their constitutional powers to go to war immediately, without a vote? On the contrary it is not our government that need to be pressurised, but Al-Assad's. He should spend less time criticising our government, which is giving humanitarian aid, and more time criticising Al-Assad for turning his country into a graveyard.
