A painting by an artist depicting her back garden in Frome has been selected from almost 900 entries to appear at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours' 200th exhibition in London.

It is the first time Annette Burkitt's work has been selected for the prestigious show at the Mall Galleries near Trafalgar Square between March 14 and 25.

The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours hold an open submission in central London each year. The institute was founded in the mid-19th century and has come to be recognised as one of the leading national institutions for watercolour painters, spanning figurative, abstract and experimental work.

Mrs Burkitt's watercolour is of her back garden in Packsaddle Way. She is largely self-taught and is a member of Frome Art Society.

Mrs Burkitt said: "I shall have one out of a total of 124 paintings in the annual exhibition. My friends in Frome have watched me struggle to produce art over the last five years and want to thank them for their forbearance. I do owe a debt of gratitude particularly to the encouragement of my friends and fellow artists in Frome Art Society."

The society will be holding its spring exhibition at Rook Lane Chapel from Saturday, March 24, until Thursday, April 5.
