London 2012 Olympian Liam Phillips ensured an ‘iconic’ biking venue in Cheddar had the perfect send-off when it staged the British Cycling BMX Championships for the final time last weekend.

Hundreds of people turned out at Broadway House, on Axbridge Road, for the event and saw Burnham-on-Sea’s Phillips win the elite men’s race.

“Had a lot of fun and pleased to take the win. Good end to the season.”

Ashley Davey took the honours in the 17-24 age group and Antony Tuffs won the 25-29 category, while Gabor Deli triumphed in the masters’ race and Ian Sharp was top veteran. Burnham’s Ryan Stack won the junior race.

Isabella Hurry, Emily Hutt, Darcie Taylor, Kim Baptista, Alesi Tye and Jennifer Noble were the female youth winners, while Charlotte Green took first place in the main championship.

The various cruiser titles were won by Lewis Locker, Scott Dominguez, Jimmy Orena, Oliver Cutmore, Simon Homans, Jason Nicholls, Alan Hill, Shaun Calvert, Ria Goodman and Abi Hill.

Broadway House has hosted the championships for the past decade but they will move on to a yet-to-be-decided venue in 2013.
