This 35-strong wind band was founded in 1999 under their Director of Music, Terry Ravenor. They came to Martock in Spring 2012 and this was so enthusiastically received that we have invited them back. Their programme includes suites, some based upon Broadway productions or films. For example "Opening Night on Broadway: featuring Springtime for Hitler; Avenue Q Theme; Always look on the bright side of Life; Circle of Life" and "Oklahoma: featuring Oh what a beautiful Morning; Surrey with a fringe on Top; People will say we're in Love; Oklahoma" plus "Superman"; "Out of Africa"; "Summer of '42" and "The Genius of Ray Charles featuring five tunes for which he became famous. The band will also play two classical suites: "Concertino Classico" featuring a flute solo and "The Longford Legend" featuring three Irish ballads.
Halfway through each half, to let the fifteen brass players rest their lips, the Scrumpy Sax Quartet will come out front to play delicious novelty numbers or jazzy items. They are a great hit wherever the band performs.
Tickets are £7 on the dooor or £6 booked in advance from 01935 822706 for collection at the door.
This will be the 85th concert put on by The Guardians of Martock Church since January 2002 and some ten thousand people have come to hear them. The Guardians raise funds for the preservation of the fabric of the building, the second largest and arguably the most beautiful parish church in Somerset, a Grade One Listed Building made entirely of Hamstone.
Wine and fruit juice will be available both before the concert and in the interval. The concert starts at 7.30pm and will last some two hours.
