Another driver rescued from floods after ignoring road closure sign in Drayton
Another motorist has had to be rescued in Somerset despite firefighters’ pleas to drivers not to venture into floodwater.
There have been dozens of incidents in the county since floods returned last November, including 51 in one 24-hour period and one in which a lorry got struck at Burrowbridge, where signs made it clear the road was closed.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue has warned repeatedly that motorists are risking their own, and others’ lives, because firefighters are being diverted to help them.
On Tuesday night, fire crews from Martock and Somerton attended a call for assistance from two people stranded in their vehicle in flood water at Drayton, near Langport.

Two firefighters in dry suits attempted to help the occupants to dry land but needed more manpower. In the end, four firefighters in dry suits were needed to remove the vehicle.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said: “Motorists are asked not to drive through floodwater, as they could be putting themselves or others in danger. Attending incidents which could be prevented may also divert fire crews from other incidents where lives are at risk.
“It is impossible for motorists to tell how deep water is or the condition of the ground beneath. There is a significant risk to life if motorists become stranded.
“If they do see floodwater on the road, they should not attempt to drive through it but should try to find an alternative route. And if a road has been closed, it is for the safety of the public and closure signs should be respected.”
