Fire devastates Axbridge motorhome workshops and closes A38 for five hours

A motorhome business near Axbridge was badly hit by a fire that closed the A38 for five hours last night.

Workshops at Westcountry Motorhomes based at Lower Weare caught fire during the night.

The Fire Service were called to reports of smoke issuing from the workshops at 12.30am and two fire engines from Cheddar were called to the scene but were unable to contain the blaze.

They were told the workshop held many vehicles and motor homes, together with a paint shop. Welding gas cylinders were also known to be inside.

The A38 was closed

in both directions.

Six neighbouring houses had their power cut off when Western Power Distribution disconnecetd the burning buildings from the mains and  the Environment Agency were also at the scene.

The worst of the fire was out by 6.30am , with crews damping down hot spots as dawn broke.

The A38 reopened at 7am.
