Fire damage minimal thanks to staff blunder
FIRE damage to Total Plumbing Supplies Ltd, Shepton Mallet, was minimised thanks to a mistake from an employee.
Members of staff at the company are told to park their vans and trucks outside the front of the building with the wheels turned towards it. This means if a thief tries to steal the van during the night, steering lock will prevent it being driven away from the site.
In this case, the driver parked the van in the wrong place and with the wheels in the wrong direction. When the fire burned through the handbrake cable, the van rolled away from the building.
Andrew Elsworth, assistant manager at Total Plumbing Supplies, said: “We were lucky. It was just a bit of luck that that night it was the one occasion it was parked the wrong way; otherwise the whole building would have gone up.
“The building’s fairly damaged but it could have been a lot worse.”
