A vet and RSPCA representatives were also involved in the rescue operation.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the horse was standing up in the water, and was not distressed.

Rescuers used a boom carrying the swimming pool's cover to move the horse towards the shallow end of the pool.

A vet was then able to sedate the animal, allowing the rescue team to apply a harness and pull the horse to the safety.

The animal was released unharmed in a nearby field.
