Abbot fight back

Thursday, November 19, 2009, 11:05

NEWTON ABBOT 1st XV 23 CLEVEDON 1st XV 12

CLEVEDON, playing with a gale-force wind at their backs, dominated most of the first half.

Their lineout was good and the scrum solid, and they took the lead with a well-worked blind-side move, which Joe Kaniecki finished off with a touchdown in the corner. Ben Hazeldine hit the upright with the conversion.

Clevedon were not afraid to throw the ball around and play rugby, which led to their second try. A counter-attack was started by Mike Lowis and the ball went through many hands before James Shopland touched down. Hazeldine converted.

The hosts hit back with a well-worked try and conversion before half-time.

Clevedon started the second half by defending well but played most of it in their own half.

They conceded too many penalties and Newton Abbot took the lead by kicking three of them. Clevedon were under pressure but they tackled well to keep their line intact.

Newton Abbot were in the driving seat and finished the game with a converted try when the left winger slipped a few too many tackles to score under the posts.

On Sunday, Clevedon travel to Tor for a Somerset Cup tie. Coach leaves at 11am for a 2pm kick-off.

CLEVEDON COLTS 14

BURNHAM-ON-SEA COLTS 0

AFTER Clevedon's defeat to Taunton the previous week, the need to get back to winning ways was a priority.

Even with the wind and rain trying to interrupt this, Clevedon Colts reinforced that at home they know how to defend and not concede.

Burnham had the wind in their faces to start the game, which gave Clevedon the majority of the first-half possession.

Both sets of forwards had to work tirelessly and Clevedon's pack moved forward through a well-set lineout through J Hinkley and M Davis, eventually leading to the latter going over for the first five points.

M Carpenter converted before Ollie Jones powered through five minutes later, with Carpenter again converting for a 14-0 lead at the break.

With the wind in Clevedon's faces, Burnham took charge of possession but endless tackling from H Foley, O Jones and B Squires saw Clevedon through the game.

Good performances from S Teall, D Bessant and A Glenn played a huge part in the result, with Carpenter controlling affairs at fly-half.

With four wins out of five, Clevedon can be pleased with their start in the Somerset league ahead of this weekend's trip to North Petherton, who have also made a good start.
