Mansell takes title after dramatic finish

THE Clevedon Golf Club 36-hole Club Championship saw an exciting play-off finish at the weekend.

Alex Godley stormed away in the first round with a 69 gross, with reigning champion Ashley Mansell responding with a sound one-over-par 72.

On day two, Godley failed to maintain his momentum, scoring 78, but with Mansell also falling back with a 75, both players finished level on 147.

A thrilling four-hole play-off, witnessed by a large gallery, saw Mansell take a one-shot lead on the first extra hole and then increase his lead on the third, before sealing victory with a fine birdie.

Lizzie Stephens headed the leaderboard in the Ladies' Championship, scoring 160 gross after two fine rounds, with Merriel Horler in second place.

Results: Men's: 1 Ashley Mansell 147 gross after four-hole play off, 2 Alex Godley 147 gross. Nett winner: Toby Chapman 132.

First day gross - James Sansum 70, first day nett - Craig MacDonald 63, second day gross - Myles Angell 71, second day nett - Jon Mansell 68.

Ladies: 1 Lizzie Stephens 160 gross, 2 Merriel Horler 198.

First day nett - Susie Gibbins 72, second day nett - Cara Swift 67, overall nett Rosemary Fife 144.
