Not a classic, but gutsy
Westfield 7
Shepton Mallet Reserves 2
A classic this was not as the rain and mud put paid to that but gutsy, determined performances by all involved made this a decent match to watch.
Westfield took the lead with their first attack when Nick Hemmings' initial shot was blocked by Dean Bell, but Bean Baber followed up to score.
Luke Prestley, Ryan Allen and Hemmings should have increased the home side's lead but, against the run of play midway through the first half, an equaliser came when Shepton were awarded a penalty for a foul by Nathan Sinden on James Foley. Rory Loxton stepped up to score from the spot.
Sinden tried to make amends, having three long-range efforts for the home side, with numerous other chances also going begging for his team-mates. However, eventually Westfield regained the lead when Dean Haley ran on to Hemmings' through ball and slid the ball past Bell.
In injury time of the first half, Sinden finally did score, drilling home from just inside the box. From the restart, the game did not get going and it was not until the 65th minute that it did when Haley crossed and Baber fired home.
Going 4-1 behind seemed to rally Shepton, with Ben Goodall in particular getting stuck in, while Dean Rowlands should have pulled a goal back after 70 minutes, latching on to a Goodall through ball, but he somehow fluffed his lines with his eventual shot.
Goodall did get what he deserved for his second-half display, converting a John Sherring corner with a low drive past Dan Tamblyn.
With 10 minutes remaining, it was Westfield who again took the upper hand, their two substitutes making the most of their chance.
A cross from the right slid under Bells' body and Jack Newman could not miss from close range. Finally, the two replacements combined, Jack Mounty setting up Newman to belt the ball home. Baber then completed his hat-trick in injury time for 7-2.
