Following the death of TV personality Jade Goody, women in Somerset are being encouraged to go for cervical screening.

Health Minister Ann Keen has announced that a panel of experts will be carrying out a review to determine whether women under the age of 25, as well as those between 25 and 64, should be routinely screened for cervical cancer.

National Cancer Director, Professor Mike Richards said: "Currently in England we start screening at 25 years old, in line with World Health Organisation recommendations.

"However it is important that we look at any emerging evidence, so that we can assure young women that this is still what is best for their health."

Following Miss Goody's case there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that awareness of cervical cancer and screening rates have increased in parts of the UK.

Health Minister Ann Keen said: "Cervical screening saves around 4,500 lives every year.

"Experts will review the latest evidence in this area, as well as consider how we can increase awareness of the importance of screening and encourage more women to take up this important service."
