A land train could be reintroduced to Burnham's seafront in time for the peak summer tourist season.

If plans are approved, the petrol-fuelled vehicle will pull two carriages along the North Esplanade between Burnham jetty and Margaret Crescent from early July until the end of the summer.

Town councillors have approved in principle the proposal to run the 16ft beach-front ride along the North Esplanade but don't think it goes far enough, according to town clerk Eileen Shaw.

She said: "We like the principle but it is only set to go a very short distance.

"The previous one went along the whole length of the esplanade as far as the yacht club. It would be better if it went further."

Jonathon Warner, of Sedgemoor District Council, said: "We were approached by someone who wants to operate the train and we took the proposal to the town council.

"If they give their consent we will take their concerns into consideration. We have to start somewhere.

"We are trying to generate more activities to stimulate tourism. We understand that people may want something bigger and better but this is an acorn that could grow, with support, due to the cost of an operator trying to buy equipment that could run into tens of thousands of pounds."

There will be an opportunity to see the land train at the Lions Club fundraising event on Saturday, July 18.

This will take place on the South Esplanade, where there will be stalls, food and entertainment for children.
