We couldn't dance in the rain

As a member of the Mendip Morris Men, and a resident of Croscombe, I share John Yeo's frustration so far as our success (or lack of it) in dancing at The George, Croscombe. (Readers letters July 22)

I also share other villagers amazement that John can't remember the pouring rain on the evening of July 15, or indeed, the howling gale and rain last November when the Village Stores were opened by Michael Eavis. On that occasion, the marquee had to be held down due to the high winds and rain, and the other musical acts booked also cancelled.

A couple of points. Melodeons (Morris Men's main instrument) are not water proof, the bodies are wooden fretwork, and the bellows are made of a form of paper-mache. They don't do rain. Secondly we have performers who come from such places as Brent Knoll, Bath, Long Ashton and Frampton Cotterell – not exactly on the doorstep. Dancing in the rain is hardly enjoyable. Decisions have to be made. On July 15 we were actually tracking the rainfall radar, and the decision was made at 6.45pm to cancel when it was already raining in Highbridge, and even then a couple of the men were on their way, as our first spot was in Wells at 8pm around the Cathedral, Palace and Market Square, hardly sheltered.

I have spoken to John, who says his letter was "tongue in cheek". I would not like your readers to think we back out of our commitments, but sometimes common sense dictates that we have to change our plans. Incidentally, we intend to visit Wells on August 26 at 8pm instead of The Wheatsheaf at Chapel Allerton which is closed.
