Shepton Mallet 269-8 beat Grendel 2nds 85 all out by 184 runs

Away to bottom-of-the-table Grendel in their last game of the season, Shepton were always confident of a win.

Captain Ben Futcher chose to bat with the intention of giving both teams a full afternoon's cricket and he attacked quickly, but was uncharacteristically out early for only 11 following several poor shots.

Fellow opener Kieran Thick batted well for his 21, but it was third man in Steve Jakeman, with a man of the match 145, who stole the show. Jakeman batted for most of the innings, sharing a 78-run partnership with Thick and a 93-run partnership with Wayne Higgins (41). His 145 featured 10 sixes and 14 fours as he obviously did not fancy too much running.

The Shepton bowlers knocked Grendel out for 85, despite some poor fielding that saw seven dropped catches. Star with the ball was David Graham (4-16). James Millward maintained his season's consistency, taking 3-34, and Tom Beck claimed 2-16.

At the end, Denis Culpin came on for his first over of the season to take the final wicket with his first ball.

Shepton's season is now over and the league positions have held true to the form of the teams over the course of the summer.

Nailsea were the clear winners and Midsomer Norton Methodists claimed second spot with Shepton finishing in third place, tied on points with the latter.

The Norton side finished above Shepton as a consequence of Shepton's poor performance in the home defeat against them and an away cancellation by Lansdown.

Missing out on automatic promotion means that Shepton are now reliant on any league restructuring above to move them up to Saturday Conference Division Three next year.

Congratulations are due to the side for some great team and individual performances throughout the year, supported by a great team spirit.
