There could be no better use for the library
I CANNOT think of a better use for the lower two floors of Bristol Central Library than as a primary school. What's more, what a privilege for children to be educated in a Grade I listed building of such renowned architectural and historical merit.
A privilege similar to that enjoyed by the students of Bristol Cathedral Choir School, to which most of the free school pupils will transfer. Pupils at the free school would aspire to progress to BCCS. The two schools would have a shared ethos.
The free school, like the adjacent choir academy, will have an emphasis on music education, so what better to be educated in the close proximity of a cathedral well known for the quality of its music both religious and secular. In the past cathedrals and churches played a much larger role in the community than today. They doubled up as theatres, meeting places, libraries, etc. To the benefit of the schools and the cathedral let's turn the clock back and give the cathedral a bigger, more comprehensive role in society, and a powerful educational role to the benefit of all students learning within the confines of College Square..
Let's not become preoccupied with changing the role of two under used, somewhat run-down, rubbish strewn and shabby floors of the library building. The conversion of these two floors to a state funded primary school will actually correct these issues in favour of a vibrant and worthy use. We can be sure that Charles Holden, the famous architect of the library building would be overjoyed to have some of his building used for educational purposes. This is a unique and very special opportunity.
