Avon and Somerset police carried out a raid at a property in Stoke St Michael as part of a £250,000 drugs bust.

One man was arrested at a property in Moonshill Road as police from both Avon and Somerset and Wiltshire joined together to smash a highly sophisticated drug growing operation which was likened to "something from a James Bond film" by officers.

About 600 plants were discovered growing in six buildings at Fairfield Piggeries, in Bradford Leigh, with many hidden behind a secret door disguised as a bookcase.

Three men were arrested at the farm with a fourth in Stoke St Michael, where a quantity of cannabis resin was discovered. The team of 30 police officers, with a sniffer dog, also seized seven guns.

Sergeant Scott Hargreave, from Wiltshire police, said: "There was quite a sophisticated setup on the farm to hide the plants. They had a door mocked up as a bookcase, which looked like something from a James Bond film, while they had gone to extreme measures to insulate the roofs of the buildings to avoid detection from heat sensors.

"This is a great result and is one of the biggest factories we've ever found in this part of the county. We are not exactly sure how long these plants have been here but we'd like to think we nipped it in the bud at an early stage."

Paul Bunt, head of Avon and Somerset police drugs strategy, said: "Officers continue to clamp down on cannabis across Avon and Somerset. In addition we are working with our neighbouring forces to ensure that crime cannot cross county borders.

"This seizure demonstrates that we are getting results. All of these plants have been destroyed and we will be investigating those responsible for their cultivation."

Anyone with information about drugs in their area should call police on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
