Youngsters show off their gymnastics skills in display
The chance to have fun demonstrating their gymnastic skills plus the thrill of watching a World Class Gymnast perform were the treats in store for a group of children when they took part in a Christmas Display that was held at Shepton Mallet Leisure Centre on Sunday.
Head coach Becky Botley organised the event that brought together children who attend classes based at Wells Blue School, Ansford School in Castle Cary as well as Shepton Mallet Leisure Centre.
The audience of over 200 people watched as 97 children aged between 4 and 16 demonstrated their gymnastic achievements.
The main display consisted of each class performing a routine set to music while other gymnasts were seen performing handstands and jumps over the vault and practising their floor moves.
Becky Botley together with other coaches gave a demonstration of more advanced floor moves to the delight of the audience.
Youngsters who were inspired by the success of Britain's gymnasts at the London Olympics were delighted when a special guest was introduced. 20-year-old Francesca Fox is a member of the Team GB Rhythmic Gymnastics team and participated at the Olympics in August. Francesca, who hails from Trowbridge and trains at the University of Bath, brought gasps of amazement from the audience when she performed her floor programme that involved exacting standards of flexibility, strength, balance and timing.
This type of gymnastic sport requires participants to perform with a piece of apparatus, either a club, ball, ribbon or hoop.
Becky Botley said: "The event went really well. The gymnasts were brilliant."
In the New Year Becky and her team will resume their busy schedule of classes and start planning inter-centre competitions due to be held in April and July as well as fundraising for extra equipment at the Shepton Mallet centre.
