ONE of Wincanton High Street's most familiar faces has stepped down from his role as town councillor.

Bernard Pearson, who runs the Discworld Emporium, has resigned due to mobility problems.

Mr Pearson, who was elected in March 2010, has encouraged the town's younger generation to fill his seat in the council chamber. He said: "Being on the town council gave me an important insight into the complexities of local government and how hard it is to get decisions made that will benefit every citizen in our town.

"I think it is very important for others to get involved in local politics, and it would be wonderful if younger people would step up and take part in local democracy.
