The heats of the Young Driver of the Year Competition supported by the Mid Somerset Series have been completed.

The 12 selected hopefuls go through to an action-packed day at the Bath and West Showground on Sunday, August 30, when they will be whittled down to three finalists.

The day will comprise off-road 4x4 driving, manoeuvring an articulated lorry around a marked course, handling a specially adapted skid car, tackling a car with a trailer, a white van, an automatic car and finishing with an on-road drive in Driving Ambition's Audi A3 S-Line.

The 12 semi-finalists are: Gary White, aged 19, of Glastonbury; Matthew Lusby, 23, of Street; Megan Somerville, 19, of Langport; Jamie Maidment, 22, of Shepton Mallet; Camilla Shirley, 19, of Shepton Mallet; Daniel Levy, 20, of Castle Cary; James Dodd, 21, of Bruton; Kim Baird, 23, of Glastonbury; Oliver Small, 18, of Glastonbury; Aaron Hendry, 17, of Wells; Dan Potter, 21, of Polden Hill, and Christopher Goodchild, 22, of Wells.

The three finalists will then spend a day being assessed on September 6 with the final held on September 11.

The winner will be crowned Young Driver of the Year 2009 and receive a prize of £1,000 plus a four day advanced driver course and RoSPA test, a pass in which brings a recognised advanced driver qualification.

The runner-up will receive £200 and the third placed entrant £100.
