Young Leadworker of the Year from Shepton
SHEPTON Mallet’s Daniel Farmer has been named Young Leadworker of the Year.
Mr Farmer, who works for Ellis and Co (Restoration and Building) Ltd, was awarded the title at the Roofing Awards earlier this year.
The ceremony was hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Susanna Reid. She handed over the trophy and congratulated Mr Farmer after his name was announced.
Mr Farmer emerged as the winner following a two-day practical assessment competition at the Lead Sheet Association (LSA) training centre in East Peckham, Kent. Six candidates were asked to produce a series of pieces of work and four were shortlisted for the Award.

The panel of four judges – Nigel Johnston and Andrew Steer (LSA) and Nigel Miles and Vince McKee (Lead Contractors Association) – were unanimous in selecting Mr Farmer as the winner of the prestigious award. They said that he displayed a professional and confident approach in producing some technically excellent work, with detail that superseded the brief given to all entrants.
Mr Farmer joined Ellis and Co's roofing division in 2010 where he hoped that working in the heritage sector would both challenge and enhance his roofing abilities. Shortly after joining, it was noted that he had a natural aptitude when working with lead and he was soon placed on a lead working course with the Lead Sheet Association.
As part of the prize Mr Farmer received a set of leadwork tools to the value of £300, a copy of the Rolled Lead Sheet – The Complete Manual and a training bursary worth up to £3,500 towards a formal leadwork QCF.
