100 Years Ago
On Tuesday, a fete was held in the grounds of The Hall, organised by the Cheddar Valley division of Tory organisation The Primrose League.
Wet weather doubtless prevented more people from coming than did. There was a varied programme of old English athletic sports in the afternoon. Amusements included swing-boats and roundabouts, and there was tea for members and visitors.
The organisers of the Wedmore Flower Show are to be sympathised with at the disaster which overtook this popular annual fixture yesterday (Wednesday). A large six-pole tent had been erected and all the exhibits had just been arranged ready for judging, when the wind, which was blowing rather strongly, blew the tent over.
Several people, who were in the tent, had narrow escapes, but no one received any injury. Only a very few exhibits were rescued from the wreckage.

Cheddar Valley Football League's new season begins tomorrow (Saturday), when two matches are being played. The first round matches for the Tweentown Rose Bowl are being played on Wednesday evening when Wedmore play Farrington Gurney and Felton play Regil.
A family party visiting Cheddar Gorge last week had a miraculous escape when a boulder crashed down on the spot where they had been seated a few seconds earlier.
They were Mr and Mrs Wilfred G Hill, of Luton, and their two children Reginald (11) and Penelope (9).

Wedmore's twinners are looking forward to the next 10 years a successful anniversary visit by their French twins. The 10 years of entente cordiale with St. Medard de Guizieres was celebrated with a weekend of activities.
Axbridge is preparing for the youth club's Blackberry Carnival on Saturday, September 21. Many people have pledged support, and the organisers hope this year will be a record one for entries.

Churchill Community School's main speaker at its speech day and prizegiving ceremony will be Christopher Parsons OBE.
The presentation will take place on September 19.
Organisers of the Winscombe Fun Day were praying for dry weather on Monday as their 15th bank holiday event got underway.
In its history the family fun day has never been rained on and this year's continued the trend.
A new £370,000 community hall and sports pavilion is set to open in a Cheddar Valley village with a service of rededication.
The Draycott Memorial Hall has been built with a £150,000 grant from the National Lottery Charities Board.
