Wells Asylum v Glastonbury St Benignus.

This match was played on the Asylum ground on Saturday last, and resulted in a draw.

The home team batted first, and ran up a score of 109 runs for eight wickets, when the captain declared.

Mallows, Dr Pope and Lane were top scorers, with 24, 21 and 20 respectively. The visitors however, tried hard to make the required runs to win, but time prevented them, and when the stumps were drawn they had 92 runs for eight wickets. Toogood was top scorer with 44.

St Benedict's day schools are very popular at Glastonbury, but, in a sense, their popularity has proved a source of trouble.

A growing attendance and the need of proper facilities for administering the modern system of education have attracted the notice of his Majesty's inspectors, and, as a result, the Board of Education demands that the school be enlarged and improved at a cost of £1300 or more.

This is a tall order for a small working parish, but the congregation of St Benignus have set themselves bravely to the task.

When Ald A C Goodson at Tuesday's meeting of Glastonbury Council asked the medical officer of health if he was fully satisfied with the condition of the water supply in the borough, Dr T H A Pinniger replied that the bacteriological analysis was entirely satisfactory so there was no danger to health at all.

Their hopes had been buoyed up about the future quality of the supply when the undertaking was sold, but he had to admit that the vegetables which he had had with his lunch that day had had a distinct flavour.

Mrs W S Dare, a member of the Street Ladies' Bowling Club, won the Somerset singles championship and, in partnership with her Street colleague Mrs C Samson, also won the county pairs championship at Weston-super-Mare on Friday.

It was reported that Mrs Legh, a trustee of the Chalice Well Trust, was shortly visiting America, and was willing to help in any question of "twinning" with Glastonbury, Connecticut.

It was decided that the Mayor (Coun Harold J Whippey) should give Mrs Legh a letter of introduction and other information to pass on to the people of Glastonbury, Connecticut. The Mayor also reported that correspondence was passing between the schools in the two towns.

A 40-year-old Street woman hid a 65p pack of sausages under her armpit while visiting a Street store, Glastonbury magistrates heard on Tuesday.

West Pennard School Fete this month raised a record sum of £450 in sunny weather.

Among the attractions were a jazz band, country dancing, roulette, catch-the-rat, an inflatable castle for the children and produce stalls.

Street people are to be asked to help raise money for a scheme to supply water to a Third World country.

The scheme is part of Street's twinning activities. It is hoped to provide a well for an underdeveloped country. Mr Burt Pursely, president of Street's twinning committee hopes that local industry, the chamber of trade, schools and other interested parties in the town will help raise the cash.

The world's longest-running yearly crop circle conference takes place in Glastonbury this weekend, at the town's Assembly Rooms.

From tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday, July 30, the Glastonbury Crop Circle Symposium will be open to visitors, running from 8.30am to 9.45pm each day.

The conference has attracted interested parties both from Britain and abroad, as far afield as Holland and South Africa, and such is the demand for tickets that the organisers have turned to Millfield to accommodate group bookings in their boarding houses.

More than 25 speakers are attending to give lectures on the phenomenon, among them authors Colin Wilson and Stuart Wilde.

Symposium organiser Sheila Martin said: "We are so lucky to get them.

"I couldn't believe it when they both said yes."
