Hayter left Doncaster this summer, after five years with the South Yorkshire club. Born in Sandown on the Isle of Wight, he started his playing career at Bournemouth, with whom he spent 11 years as a professional.

Hayter scored 93 goals in 358 Football League games for the Cherries. A statistical highlight of his time with the Dorset club came in 2004, when he set the record for the fastest hat-trick in the League’s history, grabbing three goals within 140 seconds after coming on as an 84th-minute substitute in the game in a 3-0 win over Wrexham.

The summer of 2007 was when Hayter made a £200,000 move to Doncaster, for whom he scored 34 goals in 165 League appearances.

“We are very excited to have James join us, as he gives us fantatstic experience and of course goalscoring prowess,” Johnson added.

“His experience in the dressing room, along with that of Jamie McAllister, Gavin Williams and Richard Hinds, will be invaluable for our young players, knowing that these players have the experience of winning promotion from this division and are leaders both on and off the field.”

McAllister left Bristol City at the end of last season after six years at the club. Former City boss Johnson originally took him to Ashton Gate from Hearts.
