Manager Gary Johnson revealed 31-year-old Hinds had been at Huish Park and is planning to discuss terms for a deal later today.
He said: "I am talking to Richard at the moment, who is an ex-Sheffield Wednesday player, is out of contract and we can play him if we want on Saturday.
"We did some work with him and the team this morning and if we can do business he will certainly be travelling with the team. Whether he plays or not is another thing.
"The business side has got to come to fruition and I might be jumping the gun but I would not want another rumour starting when it might be true.
"I hope the chances (of signing him) are good because he has come down all this way and he looking to get in a team where he can play first team football.
"We are looking for another centre back to compete with what we have. He seems very keen, he certainly an experienced player and I think that might be good for our younger players with Hunts out for a month."
Johnson also confirmed that former Blackburn Rovers striker Tom Hitchcock was on his radar following his release from the Premier League outfit.
"His name come up today in our office but it certainly was not anything more than that," said Johnson. "We know of him and he is the son of the keeper Kevin Hitchcock.
"That is one name that we are currently speaking about, but we have not had time just yet to make any further enquiries. He is on our list."
