Yeovil Town: Fitness and focus crucial at Oldham Athletic, says Gary Johnson
Mental strength will be key to Yeovil Town continuing their current form and table climb, according to manager Gary Johnson.
The Glovers travel to Oldham Athletic tomorrow five points clear of npower League One’s bottom four and on the back of a determined 1-0 ten-man victory over MK Dons.
Four wins from their last six games has seen Johnson’s men climb to second in the form table, above promotion-chasing Charlton and behind only Notts County.
Yeovil are two matches into eight scheduled for this month and while the boss is keeping an eye on physical fitness, he is also keen to hone their focus.
“We have to manage it [fitness], we really do,” he said. “We have had people that have come off in games like Lawson D’Ath and we have given some a break.
“It will now be down to their mental toughness to make sure they come out performing at the top level physically in every game.”
Midfielder Dean Parrett will miss the trip to Boundary Park through suspension, so Tottenham colleague Jon Obika is likely to play some part.
Reflecting on Tuesday’s Stadium:mk success, Johnson said it was important the Glovers maintained their spirit as they bid to stave off relegation.
He said: “We are still very proud of them and they agreed themselves that they really felt they were at one the other night. We had to make sure that everyone was in the game and that everyone was in the zone because we were up against a good side.
“When we went down to ten men we had to do it even more. That just brought the other ten together and that is why we can be proud of them because of their commitment.”
