Richard Hughes' free kick was enough to end Yeovil Town's unbeaten league start as AFC Bournemouth punished their tired and drab hosts.

Cherries dominated from start to finish in npower League One to register their first win of the season with former Tottenham Hotpsur chief Harry Redknapp watching from the stands in his new advisory role.

Gary Johnson's men failed to trouble visiting keep Shwan Jalal even once in a performance characterised by mental and physical exhaustion brought on by a frantic start to the season.

The losing manager said: "Certainly mentally and physically we were below par. One you can sort out by running the other stuff is psychology.

"I'm not going to lose faith in them over night. We were second best today, we had been best in most of our games at the start of the season.

"But sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say 'okay, we have got a bit of work to do, thanks for showing us some of our weaknesses."

Byron Webster recovered from his midweek rib problem to captain the Glovers as Jamie McAllister served the first of a three-game ban for his dismissal at Bristol Rovers. Nathan Ralph made his first Football League start in his place.

Yeovil attacker Sam Foley spurned a glorious chance to break the deadlock on four minutes, slipping through the Bournemouth defence but skewing his shot across goal.

On 22 minutes a patient Cherries' move ended with Lewis Grabban sending in a dangerous low cross and the home team scrambled clear.

Three minutes later Wes Fogden twisted and turned in the Glovers' area, Ed Upson blocking his first effort and Marek Stech saving the rebound with his legs.

After 35 minutes Webster gave away an unnecessary free kick on the edge of the box and Hughes capitalised to thump home, leaving question marks as to whether Stech could have got more than a hand to it.

Dissatisfied with the display on show, Johnson made a double substitution three minutes before the break, replacing Reuben Reid with Gozie Ugwu and Dominic Blizzard with Rohan Ince.

The changes failed to turn the tide and only Richard Hinds valiant block prevented Josh McQuoid from testing Stech on 45 minutes.

Moments later Upson hit the defensive wall with a long range free kick and as Cherries failed to clear he watched the ball drop to send a volley inches over the bar.

On 52 minutes former Yeovil loan favourite Shaun MacDonald breezed past Luke Ayling but sidefooted at Stech.

Fogden then passed Webster with similar ease but was denied by Hinds' committed tackle and Stech saved McQuoid's follow up. As Ayling appealed in vain for offside on 59 minutes, McQuoid crossed for Grabban to drill at Hinds.

Ince gave away possession on 65 minutes and Grabban stung Stech's hands from distance before a similarly errant Yeovil pass nine minutes later almost led to a Bournemouth second. Grabban fed substitute Wes Thomas who somehow missed the target from an angle.

As the game entered injury time Thomas gained a clear sight of goal but found Stech up to the challenge.
