Former Writhlington School pupil Jahmene Douglas may have missed out on first place in this year’s X Factor – but he will always be a star to the people who taught him as a teenager.

Jahmene, who grew up in Peasedown St John and is also a former City of Bath College student, was gracious in defeat after losing out to victor James Arthur in the final last weekend.

The 22-year-old, who performed the Beatles’ Let it Be, said: “It was such a blessing to share this stage with such a talent.”

Afterwards judge Louis Walsh told Jahmene, who had been working at Asda in Swindon after moving to the Wiltshire town: “You were born to sing not to be in a supermarket.”

TakeThat singer Gary Barlow described him as “an unbelievable voice and talent”.

More praise has been heaped on him by the head teacher of his former school.

Mark Everett said: “When Jahmene was at Writhlington he was an incredibly talented student with an amazing singing voice.

“Everyone at school has been following his progress with great enthusiasm. It is clear he has a great future in the music industry and we wish him all the best for the future.”

City of Bath College principal Matt Atkinson also congratulated Jahmene on his success.

Mr Atkinson said: “Jahmene’s voice is a nice surprise. He studied construction with us in 2008 before moving from Peasedown to Swindon.

“We have been following his progress on X Factor and don’t doubt he will be a star despite being pipped to first place.”
