Composer Martin Emslie, said: "Jonathan and I needed to find some time to rehearse his central role in Omega & Alpha and he agreed to come and stay for a couple of days. This coincided with my regular choir rehearsal, so we thought it would be fun if he came along."

The choir was thrilled when he arrived and, after singing some of his role with the choir he took centre stage and performed his main aria, 'Predicament', to great applause. He later stayed on to chat with the members of the choir and to sign their copies of the score.

Jonathan said: "It was wonderful to come down and meet the choir, because it is the start of bringing this fabulous piece of new music together. I performed a number of oratorios early on in my career and when I was at the Guildhall School of Music, but nothing will be quite like being the first person to play Jesus in the world premiere of Omega & Alpha. And I am really looking forward to singing in the unique acoustic of Wells Cathedral."

The Bishop of Bath & Wells has given it his blessing, and Jonathan will be performing alongside the Somerset-born mezzo-soprano Marta Font****s-Simmons and the internationally renown bass-baritone, Gerard Delrez. They will be supported by a choir of some 120 voices from the area and an orchestra of around 49 local musicians.

Omega & Alpha will have its world premiere at Wells Cathedral on Saturday, April 13 at 7pm. A live recording will be made of the event, and the audience will have the chance to meet the soloists and performers after the event.

Tickets are available from the website www.omegaandalpha.co.uk, from Ticketmaster or from the Wells Cathedral box office on 01749 672773.
